Alexie Rudman
Alexie Rudman (Bare & Brine)
Fascinated by both life on land and at sea, I am a self-taught mixed media artist whose work is centered on the human form and the marine environment. I was lucky to grow up on Rhode Island’s rocky shores playing in tide pools, surfing, and working in marine conservation. This affinity for the ocean is expressed in my Japanese ‘gyotaku’ fish prints and acrylic paintings. ‘Gyotaku’ was developed as a Japanese folk art in the early 1800s, before which these fish impressions were used by fishermen to record their catch at sea. I catch the fish I use in RI and MA waters (rod and reel or spearfishing)- and always eat them afterwards, too!
Through strong contrast between light and dark, and bold playful colors, my figurative works in charcoal and acrylic paint celebrate women who are strong, fearless, timeless, and resilient. I had grandparents who exposed me to classic arts at a young age, which led to an appreciation of Renaissance art and the human form. While I love creating and sharing my pieces, Bare & Brine is a vehicle for more than just business and has become a very important part of how I connect with people across all walks of life from my community.
